The book Insurgent by Veronica Roth is about the struggles of power, love and mental readiness. There is a war going on between the factions in this world. The Erudite are evil, power-hungry people, and there are only few that can and will stand against them. One of the main characters is Tobias in the book and he is a strong-willed intelligent boy who can take on any challenge and handle it with responsibility. The other main character is Tris, she is a reckless, courageous girl with a massive heart and the ability to adapt to any situation at hand. When closely reading the book, I began to notice how much these characters intricate traits can change when they are battling strong emotions. In Insurgent I believe that characters Tris and Tobias are complex characters who have constantly changing traits and heartfelt emotions that hold a deeper meaning within them.
To begin with, Tris's emotions will be explored and her traits will be shared. Tris is an extremely brave character and sometimes it does not lead to positive outcomes. One example of this is when forced to choose between safety and unsafe behavior that may lead to a resolution of their looming danger. She does not hesitate and goes with the unsafe path. This decision is one similar to those that Tris makes very often in the book and is one of her most visible character traits. Although this powerful trait has proved to be extremely dangerous to carry with her, it can save lives and has in Tris's case many times. This same trait changed slightly just a little while later. Tris had just been nominated to be the leader of her faction and was ready to take the role but stepped back for a moment and had a deep self-realization. She thought back of all she had done and all she hadn't done then noticed that she was not truthfully the completely reckless leader her faction was looking for. Tris was changing one of her own traits by herself which further shows her complexity. One example of how emotions got the best of Tris was when in the Erudite holding cell where she could not manage to keep herself together. Tris was not forming her very custom witty sentences and she was not able to think about any resolution to her situation. This is a very rare occurrence for her seeing as she performs acts of true brilliance in just about every part of the book. Overall, Tris's complexity is unmatched and even hard to analyze in Insurgent.
Tobias's traits are somewhat more straightforward than Tris's but they are also very complex. One character trait that has recently arisen for Tobias is a side of leadership that was not present previously. Tobias could always direct people if he needed to but when he was given the opportunity to become the leader of the faction, something changed within him. This new trait was displayed when Tobias yelled at his shocked, frozen friends. Members of the faction had just witnessed one of their own get shot in the back and were disoriented. Tobias instinctively told them what to do and the commanding words came very naturally for him. Although Tobias's leadership has just been discovered, I think it was always a trait that he had but just wasn't utilizing to it's full ability. This will help Tobias with many conflicts in the future and he will become more respected by his peers because of it, but more responsibility will be placed on him. Tobias's emotions in the story are very strong and he has a number of enormous outbursts at Tris, his peers or others. One emotional reaction that really caught my eye was when he lashed out on his father. As a child he was beat constantly by his father, Marcus. During an interrogation, Tobias had told a room full of spectators of this and had started being called a coward because of not fighting back. In the cafeteria one morning he could no longer handle this verbal attack and acted on it by beating Marcus senseless. This scene caught my eye and flat out shocked me because of Tobias's normally calm demeanor. In the story, the character of Tobias brought a lot of interesting surprises to me and has shown me complexity.
Character traits and emotions in the book Insurgent by Veronica Roth are both complex and very useful to me as a person. They are this way because each and every trait or emotion shown is so real and present in our world. At times in my life I have felt the need to, like Tris, resolve an issue in a dangerous way. At times in my life I have, like Tobias, felt like leading was necessary and it was my job. The emotional reactions in this book are amazingly portrayed by the author and show something that every reader can relate to. After closely reading this book, I have truly thought deeply about these two key pieces of the story. All around the world there are strong emotions and personality traits of people that are just as complex as those of the characters in Insurgent,
Great vocab Adam! Fun read!
