The Animal Within

In the story of Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks, Dog and Magpie each have an emotional struggle throughout the story that makes them who they are. The story depicts friendship, loss and jealousy all at very deep levels because of these characters fascinating traits. The main character Magpie has been struggling with hanging to the world and life itself when Dog finds her. Magpie is ready to give and up and she never fully resolves this conflict. Deep loneliness and terror really describe Magpie's key trait. Dog's trait that defines him is hidden from the plain sight and the deeper you read. the more you understand about it. Dog has lost his eye which I believe is a symbol for seeing the dark side of people he encounters. Dog befriends Fox, the antagonist without thinking about it. Although Dog helps Magpie because of his sincere kindness, he himself is isolated in a way because he is emotionally blind. In the story Fox the character traits are very fascinating and can be deeply looked into.
Magpie is a very lonely character. She has burned one of her wings and lost the ability to do what a bird does best, fly. She is surrounded by the utter darkness of her sadness throughout the book and sometimes has trouble thinking because of it. For example Towards the end of the book, Fox wants her to ride on his back and tells her it will feel like flying. Magpie misses her life so much that she gets on his back and rides, eventually being left in the night alone once more. This truly shows how hard it can be to overcome something that's happened to you in the past. Another example of Magpie's loneliness is in the beginning of the story where she does not even feel the want to start a new life with dog. Dog finds her when she is about to give up and he insists on helping her. At first, she does not accept his help because of how horrible she feels. Magpie can barely get the strength to accept help which is a sign that she is broken. Because of her struggles with Fox at the end of the book and Dog at the beginning, Magpie is a character that is lost in a sea of loneliness.
Dog is a character that is blind physically and emotionally. He has lost his eye and some of the world with it. Dog no longer sees all that he should and doesn't get a sense of the dangers around him. Throughout the story, he rarely shows that he is blind and is too busy mending Magpie's deep wounds. One example of his blindness is his encounter with Fox. When Fox appears in front of Magpie and Dog, he is described as having, "a smell of rage and envy". Dog welcome him into their group and gives him the privilege to be with them. By doing this, he is forgetting about what half of the world is like and only remembering the good and joy in it. Another example of Dog being blind is how the characters around can see it in him more than himself. When Magpie says "I will be your missing eye and you will be my wings" it has a deeper meaning. Magpie will show Dog a different perspective of the world, one that he does not see. She will show him what he would not be able to discover about himself. This shows how separated Dog is and what makes him the intricate character that he is.
Overall, the book Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks is one of the few books that characters can be looked at in either a normal of extremely deep level. The characters of Magpie Dog and even Fox are all beyond deep. They create a trio of thinking and each of them are completely different. Somehow, Wild has managed to create this complex story and has been able to make it what it is.
